This multimodal research project employed web-based surveys, focus groups, case file reviews, and point-of-intake tracking to collect information on the prevalence of rights restoration proceedings in Florida. The researchers found that guardians infrequently initiated restoration proceedings on behalf of persons under guardianship; persons under guardianship are unaware of their rights; families failed to understand the differences between guardians, caregivers, or family members; and the school system frequently prompted family members to pursue guardianship rather than alternatives. The research project team determined to develop a guide to restoration and less restrictive alternatives called "Lighting the Way" based on these findings.
